If you have driven down Gothard on a Saturday morning lately, you have likely noticed that Seabreeze is abuzz with activity!
The cars that you saw in the parking lot represent hundreds of Huntington Beach families (some of whom are a part of Seabreeze, but most of whom are not) gathering together to cheer on their kids in the Upward Basketball and Cheer League.
This Saturday will mark the 7th week of games in the Upward Season. The league is for players K-8th. This year’s league consists of 265 participants, 30 teams, and one cheer squad. Each team practices once during the week and plays a game on Saturday. As you can imagine, this requires a lot of volunteers! It requires head coaches, assistant coaches, team moms, referees, concession stand workers, food service workers, time keepers, score keepers, and a set up/take down crew. All of these pieces have come together to create a quality and unique sports experience for our community.
What is unique about it you may ask? Well, Upward Basketball and Cheer uses something called the 360° Progression. The 360° Progression is an approach to training players that permeates every part of the league. It goes beyond seeking to develop players athletically and instead seeks to develop players mentally, athletically, spiritually, and socially. This unique approach finds its origin in Luke 2:52 which says that Jesus grew “in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.”
Another verse that well describes what Seabreeze is seeking to accomplish through Upward is 1 Timothy 4:8 which says, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” While we go to great lengths to provide excellent athletic training in a way that promotes sharp thinking, character and teamwork, we also realize that athletic training is not the thing that holds the highest value.
Knowing and following God holds the highest value. It is the biggest game changer that could occur in anyone’s life. As we help kids learn to box out, set screens and show good sportsmanship, our prayer is that families would also find opportunities for knowing and following God.
The final two game days of the year are this Saturday and next Saturday (1/27 & 2/3). If you haven’t been able to make it to any games this year then I invite you to come check out the action! Games run from 8am to 1pm. If you are interested in being a part of impacting our community through Basketball and Cheer in the 2018-19 Upward Season then feel free to email me at email@example.com.
