Where do evaluations, practices, and games take place?
All Upward events take place at the Seabreeze Basketball Courts. These are arguably the nicest outdoor basketball courts in Huntington Beach. They are open to the public when not in use, so we invite you to come by, check them out, and shoot around while you’re at it!
Why do you do Evaluations?
Evaluations help us gather objective information about the skill level of each 1st – 8th grade basketball participant. This information is used to form balanced teams that promotes fun and healthy competition. We also use evaluations to make sure that your child is correctly sized for his or her uniform and provide you with helpful information about the league.
What happens at Evaluations?
For 1st-8th Grade Basketball Players: Your child will perform six of on-the-court drills and be sized for the correct size uniform. Once these are completed, you are free to go!
For Cheerleaders & Kindergarteners: Your child will be sized for his or her uniform and then you are free to go!
When are Evaluations?
Your child only needs to attend ONE of the following evaluations. You do not need to arrive at the beginning of the evaluation you choose to attend but can arrive at any point during the allotted time.
Monday, Sep 16 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Thursday, Sep 19 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Thursday, Sep 26 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm
When are practices?
Each team practices once per week at a set time. Practices last for one hour. Weekly practice times vary from team to team, but they are all on weekdays (M-F) in the early evening. If there is a day of the week that you know is not an option for your family, let us know when you register online and we will not place your child on a team that practices on that day. Practices begin the week of November 5th and continue through the week of January 28th (with the obvious breaks for Holidays).
When are games?
Games occur on Saturdays. They last for one hour each. Games begin on December 7th and end February 8th (again, with the obvious breaks for Holidays). Older kids games will generally begin in the mornings, while younger kids will generally play closer to mid-day or afternoon.
My child hasn’t participated a basketball or cheer league before but would like to try. Will this league be a good fit?
Absolutely. We focus on teaching fundamentals, teamwork and strength of character. Players of all skill levels will find that they are able to have fun, engage in healthy competition, and grow in their athletic ability.
Can my child play on the same team as his or her friend?
When you register online you can use the "Carpool Link" feature to request that your child is placed on the same team as one player in your child's division. Players who mutually request each other will be placed on the same team.
If there are additional friends who you would like your child to play with then you are free to make the request that they play together in the “Notes” section of the online registration form. We will consider these additional requests when forming teams, but only players who mutually select each other as carpool links will be guaranteed to play on the same team.
Can my child practice on the same evening as his or her sibling?
We try to place siblings playing in different division on teams that practice on the same evening. However, with the large number of sibling who participate in the league, it is not always possible. If siblings are playing in the same division then they will automatically be placed on the same team, unless otherwise requested.
Are discounts or scholarships available?
Yes. Sibling discounts of $25 are automatically applied when you register online. Scholarships are also available and can be requested using the scholarship request form.
